Passenger Train Ticket Price: Relief Amidst Fare Structure Changes – GMRIT

Beginning on February 27, Indian Railways restored second-class Normal Rates on “Passenger Trains,” which are now called “Express Specials” or “MEMU/DEMU Express” Trains. 

The Railways discontinued “Passenger Trains” after the COVID-19 pandemic lockout and increased the lowest possible ticket price from Rs 10 to Rs 30, in line with Express Train pricing. Chief Reservation Ticket Managers were informed about the reversal by railway officials on Tuesday morning. 

Ordinary Class prices on all Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains including those with numbers beginning with “Zero” were reduced by almost 50%, according to railway authorities. 

The Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) App’s tariff structure has also been updated. All trains that were formerly classified as passenger trains but are currently running across the country as “Express Special” or MEMU trains are eligible for this fare reduction. 

What Changes Occur in Passengers Train? 

Since the Indian Railways renamed them as express specials, it appears that the golden era of train passengers is over. Commuters taking express specials are paid express prices, which are nearly twice as much as the previous rates. 

The “second class ordinary fare,” which was intended for passenger trains, has been abandoned. Railway insiders claim that the passenger carriages are being run as express specials on the same paths and disruptions, using the same old rakes. 

Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs) are being used by certain combinations of carriages in the Trichy and Madurai divisions, while Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMUs) have taken over those that carry passenger trains in the Chennai Region.

What type of Train can’t use a standard fare scheme? 

Booking agents at MGR Chennai Central, one of the major train stations in the nation, informed customers that the standard fare scheme did not apply to suburban trains. In certain routes, the fares have increased. 

For example, before the COVID-19 pandemic, a passenger or DEMU rail ticket from Chennai to Tirupati cost ₹35. However, the cost went up to ₹70 following the COVID lockout. According to the sources, tickets from Chennai Coastal to Vellore and Chennai Egmore to Puducherry, which used to cost ₹30 and ₹45, accordingly, now cost ₹65 and ₹80.

Senior railway authorities said that the normal fare structure depended on the categorization of the train, whether it was a leisure or express train in addition to the train or interruptions when asked whether the quickness of the passenger trains had risen enough to justify the charging of express fares. 

The second-class standard cost that had been in place for passenger trains was removed by the railways following the outbreak. There are no longer any passenger trains in service.

The Principal Chief Commercial Manager gave the appropriate officials in Hubballi, Bengaluru, and Mysuru instructions on February 22, 2024, to impose the second-class regular passenger fares for all MEMU/DEMU and passenger trains that make stops at all terminals on their way from the origin to the intended location. 

This modification would have had a major impact on passenger profits in 2022–2023, since last year the Southern Railway’s passenger section brought in a record-breaking ₹6,345 crore. 

The withdrawal of passenger trains or their redesignation as quick specials with higher tickets, however, has not been formally announced.
