The rates for the 2024 BAH have been made public by the Department of Defense. It will rise by an average of 5.4 percent on January 1, 2024, when the new rates come into effect.

The normal income for service members is known as “base pay” or basic military pay, and it varies depending on their specific pay grade. Before additional allowances like BAH, COLA, Clothing, Bonuses, and Special Pay, this is the service member’s remuneration. 

The average BAH rates rise, however, there are regional variations in the rental markets’ market patterns, which are reflected in the BAH rates for 2024.

Every year, the Department gathers data on rental housing costs for around 300 military housing sites across the US, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Despite a reform mandated by Congress, BAH rates were gradually lowered to five percent less than actual housing costs over time. 2019 saw the completion of that procedure. 

In 2024, the approximately one million troops who get BAH will cover between $84 and $194 per month of their estimated housing expenditures. Going forward, rates will remain at 95% of real costs.

The BAH, which was greatly increased in 2023 due to historic inflation and soaring housing expenses, has since decreased along with rate hikes. In 2024, BAS will only increase by 1.7%. 

The Air Force and Space Force locations that have had the biggest growth are:  

  • About 13% of all bases are Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana
  • 12% are Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas
  • 12% are Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina.

After surpassing 15 percent growth last year, other bases seeing at least 5 percent increases are as follows: 

  • Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina
  • Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota
  • Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina
  • Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont. 

There were some bases where BAH decreased, including: 

  • Nevada’s Nellis Air Force Base
  • California’s Beverly Air Force Base
  • Idaho’s Mountain Home Air Force Base 
  • McConnell Air Force Base
  • Kansas; Patrick Space Force Base, Fla. 

Military Housing Allowance 2024 Amount

The member cost-sharing component of the 2024 Basic Allowance for Housing rates will remain at 5% of the national average housing cost by pay grade, as part of an extensive military compensation package.  

For the 2024 rates, these sums range from $85 to $194 per month and depend on the grade and dependent status. 

Approximately one million Service members will receive payments totaling an estimated $27.9 billion. The average BAH rates rise, however, there are regional variations in the rental markets’ market patterns, which are reflected in the BAH rates for 2024.

In 2024, the Basic Allowance for Housing Rates will see a 3.9% rise requested by the U.S. Department of Defense. Although these are only suggestions at this point, new BAH rates normally take effect on January 1.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that the 12.1% that military personnel experienced in 2023 was a historic gain because of inflation, even though many may consider 3.9% to be modest. 

In nearly 300 military housing sites, the Department of Defense estimated that BAH rates would cover approximately 95% of housing expenditures (including rent and utilities) in 2023. 

More than a million service members will get payments totaling an estimated $26.8 billion. The unusual market circumstances that have been present across the country for the past year are reflected in the rise in BAH rates.

How will the new BAH rates affect individuals?

Although BAH rates rise generally, they did not rise everywhere. If you live in an area where rates have been reduced, BAH Rate Protection guarantees that your BAH will not decrease. 

Rather, you will continue to be charged at your prior rate unless any of the following situations occur:

  • The BAH tariffs in effect at your new duty station will be given to you.
  • Regardless of whether it is less than your current rate, you will be given the current BAH rate for your new pay grade.
  • The BAH for the higher of your former pay grade or your new pay grade will be given to you. 
  • The BAH “with dependents” rate will apply to you if you previously did not have a dependent.
  • You will be paid the BAH “without dependents” rate if you lose your dependent(s) as a result of a divorce, becoming too old to be dependent, or a death in the family.
